Each year, the Foreign office conducts assessments of human rights around the world, in an attempt to measure the true extent of abuses and their occurrences.  But this could be about to change as reports suggest that the new coalition government is planning to scrap these assessments.

Civil servants who were working on the next report on human rights have been told to stop. The reports tend to highlight incidents of torture and oppression, as well as being used to monitor the use of the death penalty. The report also goes further and often acts as a tool for ministers in establishing which countries it is ethical to trade with.

It is clear that this move of scrapping human rights assessments has caused a rift in the government, as former Liberal Democrat leader; Sir Menzies Campbell claimed it would “downgrade human rights”.  Sir Campbell went on to further remark that the move would be met with “fierce resistance”.
The reports were first introduced in 1997 by Robin Cook, and its unsettled future is causing many NGO’s to be concerned.

Without this report ministers could ‘blindly’ pursue commercial interests in countries that have poor records for human rights, say NGO’s.

The previous Labour government used the human rights report to announce concerns for over 20 countries. These included China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Zimbabwe. The shadow foreign secretary, David Miliband remarked that the report “saved lives” as it revealed atrocities in countries such as Burma, Gaza and Sri Lanka. David Miliband went on to say that “Britain has led the world in standing up for human rights and the coalition is taking a serious step back.”

Embassy staff are crucial in developing reports as they often spend months at a time investigating alleged atrocities.  But recently staff have been told to “hold fire” as the future of the reports is discussed. David Miliband has remarked that “the word has already gone out to embassies that we need to concentrate on trade. It’s not surprising, but it’s very sad.

NGO’s have expressed concerns that government officials are putting economic concerns above human rights. The director of Human Rights Watch warned that Government was “blindly pursuing commercial interests” and as a result would undermine human rights. These thoughts were echoed by Amnesty International UK by remarking that the Government risked raising “serious questions about how much they value human rights”.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office remarked that “The foreign secretary is determined that the UK’s foreign policy should reflect the values that we uphold at home and that our actions overseas be consistent with support for human rights.In the current financial climate …we need to look carefully at how best to communicate and ensure transparency with parliament and the public on our human rights activity.”

Immigration has been a hot topic for years and most people have strong opinions on the subject. Unfortunately, we rarely hear views from people who do not see the subject as black or white. Either people support immigration into this country or they are dead against it. Passions run high when discussing such a volatile issue.

Whether you are for or against immigration, there is inexcusable discrimination being focused at legal and illegal immigrants and it’s coming from sources you may be surprised at. If you’ve ever been to the supermarket and read a label or called a government office or a major corporation you have experienced the same thing I have. At the supermarket , almost every label is written in two languages – English and Spanish. When you call a government office or a large corporation, the first question the answering service asks you is if you would like to hear instructions in English or Spanish.

You may think that all these corporations are trying to assist Spanish speaking Americans – but are they really? I propose the concept that these companies do not care at all about Spanish speaking immigrants.

I believe that corporations all across America that print labels in Spanish and offer callers Spanish instructions only care about one thing… and that is money. They don’t care if you speak English or Spanish – their only concern is that they make it as easy as possible for you to purchase their products.

These outright discriminatory practices by American corporations can be looked at in two ways. If you are a German immigrant, or an Asian immigrant (and the list goes on) you might say to yourself: Why aren’t the supermarket labels also printed in German, Japanese, Chinese, Italian, Russian or French? Why don’t the answering services in major corporations and government offices allow the caller to choose these other languages instead of only Spanish?

Spanish speaking immigrants may feel very special because corporations choose only to focus on their language at the expense of all other nationalities but the ramifications of this special treatment are ominous.

These corporations are in reality condemning Spanish speaking Americans to a life of poverty in the USA.

By printing labels in Spanish they make it exceedingly easy for Spanish speaking Americans to NOT learn English. They unwittingly hold back millions of Spanish speaking people in almost every walk of life. Whether it’s applying for a job, or seeking higher education – if you do not speak English, your chances of landing that good job or being accepted into college are reduced ten fold. By making it easy for the parents of Spanish speaking children to make no attempt at learning English, also condemns those children to struggle in school while other English speaking children advance quickly.

Immigrants from other nations who are not treated to this so-called advantage of having their language printed on every label are forced to learn English or risk failing at assimilating into American society. By learning English, their paths are paved to advance quickly and truly attain the American dream. We got married in Vancouver, Canada but we can’t go to the USA as a married couple cause gay marriage is not legal in a federal way so immigration laws stop us from starting a new and better life in the USA. PLEASE HELP US LEGALIZE GAY MARRIAGE IN THE USA. I have to leave all I had, including career and dog, to move to a different country with a different language. I can’t find a decent job in Germany cause I do not speak German. Our future here is not good.
